Giving everything our everything

What activities do you lose yourself in?

We say “losing yourself” (aka., being in flow state) because it roughly means the same thing as “giving our all.” When we give something our everything, that means we lose our everything, hence, we lose ourself. Understanding this connection gives us a different kind of insight especially when we struggle to get into this “flow-state” on-demand.

Personally, I lose myself whenever I am learning anything new. Whether this is in a field I am already knowledgeable in or a completely different field, I tend to be in a flow state whenever I gain new insight and knowledge.

It is difficult. And yes, many times it is demotivating. However, “giving it my all” means that I should also let go of my ego whenever I see the skill level of others. It means I should give away all my pride, my concerns, and my time.

The reason we fail to be in flow-state is because we have so many inhibitions. We have so many thoughts in our head we cannot let go of. While it may be hard to let go of some of these thoughts, it is a necessary step if you truly want to experience losing yourself in a task.

The thoughts holding us back, and how we can let go of them, are different for everyone. We as individuals should understand these hurdles, and take our own steps to let go. Only then can we can experience the joy of losing ourselves in an activity we want to commit ourselves to.
